There was barely a murmur from the globalist Davos crowd as American President Donald Trump stole the show in an address that was at times reassuring, thunderously funny and even shocking. The crowd had frequently applauded Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney’s dissertation during which repeatedly but obliquely attacked the United States on Tuesday, but the reaction to Trump was in stark contrast.
“People are very happy with me,” Trump joked after noting productivity, unemployment and inflation numbers from the US. He noted that while there were "so many friends" in the audeince there was also a "few enemies," which got a laugh from the crowd.
This was Trump’s second appearance before this globalist summit and the sole purpose of his visit was to declare globalism a failure. He clearly enunciated America First policies and said US prosperity is a result of his administration deliberately eschewing the oppressive and job-killing program that the WEF promotes on its website as it promotes a world of 15 minute cities, insects for dinner, windmills, mass migration, and owning nothing.
Trump attacked the “Green New Scam” energy policies as the “biggest hoax in history” and said Europe had become ”unrecognizable.” He called the politicians of the world who have put their trust in windmills as frankly “stupid.” Trump was at his best describing the Green New Scam and his words were likely invigorated and galvanized the MAGA base the GOP needs to gain during the midterms to retain congressional power.
“There are windmills all over Europe,” Trump began. “There are windmills all over the place, and they are losers. One thing I've noticed is that the more windmills a country has, the more money that country loses, and the worse that country is doing." He noted that while China makes all the windmills, "they go with oil and gas." Windmills, he said, "kill the birds, they ruin your landscapes. Other than that, I think they're fabulous, by the way. Stupid people buy them."The audience was filled with just such stupid people.
He read an economic report card for the United States that would make any of those European states green with envy and he revealed what he has in mind for Greenland.
Although he promised the United States “won’t use force” to annex what he repeatedly called “a panel of ice,” he made it clear that the status quo simply isn’t an option. “All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland,” Trump said.
“So they have a choice,” Trump said, “you can say 'yes' and we will be very appreciative, or you can say 'no,' and we will remember. A strong and secure America means a strong NATO, and that's one reason why I'm working every day to ensure our military is very powerful. Our borders are very strong, and above all, our economy is strong because national security requires economic security and economic prosperity.”
Trump may not really want a strong NATO, given that the organization clearly seems to have survived way beyond its best before date exists merely as an anachronism from the Cold War. Trump made it clear that he resents how America has always paid most of the bills for NATO and that the organization would have ossified or collapsed years ago without constraint infusions of US funding.
“What we have gotten out of NATO is absolutely nothing,” the president said, suggesting that “we’ll be there 100% but I’m not sure they’ll be there for us.” Trump has always been less than unequivocal about US membership in NATO. He noted, too, that Ukraine is an ocean away from America.
Trump's reponse to a Danish refusal to allow for a peaceful annexation of Greenland may not be a military one but it could well mean a US withdrawal from NATO. Trump has been looking for this kind of backdoor exit from NATO for quite some time and this may be his opportunity. Europe would have to take full responsibility for its own defence.
Trump's assessment of Canadian leader Mark Carney, who he endorsed in the last Canadian federal election, sounded a lot like buyer's remorse as he described the Liberal Party leader as ungrateful.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us. By the way, they should be grateful also, but they're not. I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn't so grateful. They should be grateful to the US, Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that Mark the next time you make your statements.”
Trump pulled no punches. He had no reason to. He wasn’t talking to the globalist elites and really didn’t give a damn if they approved of his words or not. He was speaking directly to the Americans who are still determined to put their country first and let Europe stew in its own juices.
