Trump says Iran war will end after election, gas prices will get under $2 gallon

President Trump spoke to reporters on the tarmac on Wednesday as he headed to Dallas to deliver the keynote speech at the Republican National Convention's midterms event and revealed that he believes the war with Iran "will end immediately after the election."

"They can't hold out any longer," he went on. "They're desperate, to try and affect the election so that we could get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon. All they want is a nuclear weapon and if they had a nuclear weapon the whole world is in deep trouble."

The war in Iran has been chugging along since February 28, 2026, when Trump launched the attack on the nation with the mission of preventing them from gaining a nuclear weapon. Initially, Trump had said he expected the conflict to last 2-4 weeks.

That has not been the case as America has continued drone operations as has Iran. As a result of the conflict, fuel prices took a drastic rise and have remained high for months, even through the summer driving season and into Labor Day.

Iran has been striking out at military bases in the region and attempting to block ships from going through the Strait of Hormuz, a key trade route. The Middle Eastern nation of Jordan revealed that they had interception 18 Iranian missiles, CBS reports.

When Trump was asked if he was interested in negotiating with Iran ahead of the midterm elections, he said no. "We're not looking for it, to be honest," he said. "Originally I wanted to make a deal. We're so far down the line, they have very little country left right now, so we're not looking for it. Yes, a negotiation could possibly happen but it's not something we're looking at."

Oil reached over $100 per barrel on Wednesday but Trump said he thought that price would be coming down, again, just after the November midterm elections where Americans will decide which party controls the House and Senate.

He was asked when oil and gas prices would come down and how he would explain the high cost to Americans. "I think it's very easy to explain to America," he said, "All you have to do is say 'will you let Iran have a nuclear weapon' and the answer is 'no.' And they're doing very poorly. Their country is in shambles right now. They are, as you probably have seen, 300% inflation. Their money is valueless, they're not paying their soldiers. We control the Strait. And lots of other things.

For a little while I would say this, shortly, but right after the election, because they'd like to have it that way, but right after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward, they're going to be tumbling down. And we'll get 'em down and I think for gasoline we'll get it below $2 a gallon."
