Iranian officials are casting doubt on reports that Tehran and Washington are close to reaching an agreement to end the war, with one senior lawmaker calling the reported US proposal unrealistic, reports the Times of Israel. It comes after President Donald Trump announced that Project Freedom, the US military effort to secure ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz, would be put on hold, citing the supposed advancements in peace talks.

The response came after an Axios report said the US and Iran were nearing a one-page memorandum that could help bring the conflict to an end. According to the report, Washington was expecting Tehran to respond within 48 hours.

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy commission, rejected the characterization in a post on X. He wrote that the proposal was an “American wishlist [and] not a reality.”

In the same statement, Rezaei warned that Iran was prepared to respond militarily if negotiations broke down.

“Americans will not gain in a lost war what they failed to achieve in face-to-face negotiations. Iran has its finger on the trigger and is ready; if they do not surrender and grant the necessary concessions, or if they or their lapdogs attempt any mischief, we will respond with a harsh and regrettable response.”

Iran’s foreign ministry also indicated that no final decision has been made. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told Iranian news agency Iranian Students' News Agency that Tehran is still reviewing the US proposal. “Once Iran concludes its assessment, it will convey its views to the Pakistani side,” ISNA reported. The outlet also reported that the US proposal contained demands that Tehran views as unacceptable.

According to ISNA, the terms “included excessive and unrealistic demands that have been strongly rejected by Iranian officials in recent days.” Iranian state media further reported that negotiators are currently focused only on ending the conflict, with nuclear matters not part of the active discussions at this stage.

The Axios report said one provision under discussion would require Iran to commit to a moratorium on nuclear enrichment.

President Donald Trump has also warned that fighting could resume if Iran does not comply with terms already discussed, though he has not publicly detailed what concessions Washington is demanding.

He wrote on Tuesday, "Based on the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign aghainst the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and FInal Agreement with Representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the Blockage will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed."
