President Donald Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping a tour of the White House on Thursday during the leader's state visit to the US. At one point during the tour, Trump showed him the photos of past presidents, and showed Xi that former President Joe Biden's portrait in the White House is just a picture of an autopen.
Trump said, "Trump, and another Trump, and then this is the autopen," the president said.
Xi cracked up in response to the portrait. The tour followed the elaborate arrival ceremony for the summit that featured military bands and a jet flyover. Additionally, the two leaders gave remarks on Thursday morning, where Xi said that he wanted the US and China to grow closer in their relationship when it comes to the military, AI, business, and other aspects of the countries.
The visit comes amid high tensions regarding AI, as China and the US have been leading the advancement of the field of technology. Trump posted to social media ahead of the summit on Thursday, "A big day with President Xi of China. Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is. That is China’s position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ!"
Xi said that he wanted to avoid the "Thucydides trap," a political science concept that refers to where two rising powers end up going to war. "Our two militaries should maintain regular dialog and improve mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention. Thucydides trap can be overcome," Xi said during his speech.
Trump said that he has forged "a truly great friendship" with Xi and said, “Our teams have been working to encourage a more balanced trading relationship, including the new market access for American farmers and ranchers.”
