US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke from the White House on Thursday to kick of the Chinese leader's state visit to the US. Trump remained vague about what would be discussed while Xi called for greater coordination and cooperation between the two countries, including on the subject of AI.
Trump spoke first, welcoming Xi and the First Lady of China Peng Liyuan to the US, where he said that he and Xi have "forged a friendship, a truly great friendship, actually built on mutual respect and the vital interests of our people."
He laid out the priorities of the visit, and said what would be discussed as the two nation's leaders will hold private meetings later on Thursday. "Our teams have been working to encourage a more balanced trading relationship, including the new market access for American farmers and ranchers. During this visit, we will also discuss pressing issues concerning security, technology, and superintelligence (SI) The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come."
Trump did not go into specific details about what would be discussed on the different topics. Xi, however, called for much more coordination between the two countries, including on AI.
