Vickrum Digwa, the convicted murderer of 18-year-old British student Henry Nowak, is reportedly “cowering” in his prison cell after receiving threats from fellow inmates.
Digwa was sentenced last month for the fatal stabbing of Nowak, where he falsely claimed that Nowak had made racist remarks toward him, prompting police to arrest Nowak as he was bleeding out. Following his conviction, Digwa was transferred from Winchester Prison to HMP Frankland, a high-security facility referred to as “Monster Mansion” for the number of notorious violent offenders housed there.
Digwa was granted “enhanced” prisoner status, the highest privilege level available for prisoners. Because of this, he has access to a weekly spending allowance, gym facilities, and workshops. He also has telephone privileges, though he is prohibited from contacting his brother, who is facing weapons charges, and his mother, who was convicted of assisting an offender.
Despite his enhanced status, prison officials are monitoring Digwa closely amid concerns he may be targeted by other inmates. According to a report by The Sun, he has already received threats.
“Digwa was okay at Winchester and wanted to stay there, and no prison governor really wanted him. So to say he's frightened now is an understatement,” a source told the outlet. "He's cowering in his cell and doesn't want to mix.”
"He's already had threats and is aware of what happened to Huntley,” he added. "He's in a really bad situation and knows it not that anyone feels sorry for him."
The reference was to Ian Huntley, one of the UK’s most notorious child killers, who was killed by a fellow inmate earlier this year.
Prison officers are reportedly conducting welfare checks on Digwa every 15 minutes, though the source indicated that the heightened monitoring is not expected to continue indefinitely.
