“It is hereby announced that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed to vessel traffic; It is noted that this first step is a response to the enemy’s breach of promise, and if the aggression continues, further steps will be planned and taken to force the enemy to comply with its obligations,” the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters said in a statement.
The Iranian military headquarters said that the move was in reaction to the US' "clear bad faith and breach of its commitment to implement the first clause of the memorandum of understanding for ending the war" and that they closed the Strait of Hormuz "in response to the continuous and ongoing violations of the ceasefire by the Zionist regime in southern Lebanon."
According to CENTCOM, 55 vessels transited the waterway on Saturday. "U.S. forces remain present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and in full force and effect," CENTCOM said in a statement.
Overnight, the Israeli military said that it was conducting strikes against Hezbollah targets in Southern Lebanon despite a ceasefire that was announced earlier on Friday.
"Hezbollah launched 50+ projectiles toward IDF soldiers operating in southern Lebanon. In order to remove threats & in response to Hezbollah’s blatant violations, the IDF struck dozens of Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure sites & terrorists in southern Lebanon throughout the night," the IDF said in a statement.
The move from Iran to close the waterway comes after the Trump administration agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding with Iran that explicitly tied the ceasefire between the US and Iran to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
