A car rammed multiple pedestrians in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday, leaving at least one person dead and several others injured. It took place in the city center. Emergency crews flooded the area not long after. Police said the vehicle hit people on Grimmaische street before the driver took off. The ramming incident may be a potential terror attack.

In a post on X, authorities stated the car “fled the scene.” The suspect was later arrested, with police adding that “there is currently no further danger from him.” Leipzig mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the fatality but said investigators still had no clear answers. “We still don't really know the motivation. We don't know anything about the perpetrator."

Emergency services reported multiple casualties beyond the death. Leipzig fire service chief Axel Schuh said two people were seriously injured and two others were “affected.” The response involved a large deployment of police officers, firefighters, and medical personnel. Two helicopters were also sent to assist at the scene as crews secured the area and treated the wounded, reports EuroNews.

Leipzig, located southwest of Berlin, has a population of more than 630,000 people and is among the largest cities in eastern Germany. The incident took place near key central streets not far from historic parts of the city, drawing a heavy emergency presence in a busy urban zone.

Authorities have not released further details about the driver or possible motive.

Germany has dealt with a number of similar vehicle-ramming incidents in recent years, and though the motive in this case is not known yet, several have had direct links to Islamic extremism. In December 2024, am attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg left at least six people dead and hundreds injured at a Christmas market.
