Germany has dealt with a number of similar vehicle-ramming incidents in recent years, and though the motive in this case is not known yet, several have had direct links to Islamic extremism. In December 2024, am attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg left at least six people dead and hundreds injured at a Christmas market.
