President Donald Trump announced on Monday morning that the United States would "postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure." The postponement will last for five days "subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions" that are happening between Iran and the United States.

In his full message, Trump said "I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East. Based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions."

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said "We've had very strong talks... they very much want to make a deal." He said that these talks may end the conflict "very substantially."

At the end of last week, Trump said the US would "obliterate" a gas field as well as Iran’s power plants if Iran continued to fire on Qatar and kept the Strait of Hormuz closed. Trump also said Friday that he believed the US was "winding down" operations in Iran.

According to CNN, Iran has "denied any dialogue with Washington, dismissing Trump’s claims as an attempt to lower energy prices and buy time, according to reports by state-affiliated media outlets citing the Iranian foreign ministry."

On Friday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that sanctions on Iranian oil would be lifted for 30 days for oil in tankers currently stranded at sea. "By temporarily unlocking this existing supply for the world, the United States will quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets, expanding the amount of worldwide energy and helping to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran," Bessent said.

The United States and Israel have been conducting strikes on Iran since February 28. The supreme leader was killed in those opening strikes, but since then, the Iranian press has reported that his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been appointed supreme leader in his stead. Iran has kept up a volley of missile attacks on Israel and has also struck out at neighboring Arab nations UAE and Qatar.

When commencing the attack on Iran, Trump said that he expected the engagement to last 4 to 5 weeks. Since then, US Central Command has indicated, through preparedeness preparation, that the conflict could go longer, into 100 days or even into September. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told reporters at the Pentagon that he did not anticipate a "forever war" or an open-ended fight but that the US would be in Iran as long as necessary.

The question of whether or not the US would put troops on the ground in Iran has been consistent, with the administration not being clear on an answer. However, Marines continue to be deployed to a region that already has many US war ships, the nation's largest air craft carrier, and many fighter jets. Iran has effectively kept the Strait of Hormuz closed, preventing oil tankers from bringing fuel out of the region to buyers.
