The United Kingdom has seen a 16-year high record numbers of migrants seeking to settle in the nation. That record is a 24 percent increase from the prior year, reports The Times, and the largest number granted residency since 2010.
The Labour government has granted indefinite leave to remain (ILR) to 199,628 migrants in the year ending June 2026. The UK continues to see a mass migration crisis, with migrants making the Channel crossing in dinghys from France even as French authorities try to stop them.
In addition to the nearly 200,000 given permanent residency, the Home Office revealed that 245,520 people were given citizenship in the UK for the year ending 2026. While this is a slight, 4 percent decrease, per The Times, the numbers are still in the highest range the nation has seen.
Government reforms coming under Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will see changes to the waiting period for migrants to receive ILR. These changes have encouraged migrants who are in the country to seek legal status ahead of those measures coming into effect.
Instead of five years to obtain ILR, migrants will need to wait 10 years, or 15-20 years for low-wage workers. Those who are on the upper end of the pay scale will qualify for ILR at a much higher rate, with some able to obtain it in just three years. Criminals will still be eligible but will need to wait longer.
Mahmood will also make changes to who is eligible for public benefits, and only citizens will be able to get on the dole or obtain other services. Those who have ILR and seek citizenship must wait a year after obtaining residency before they can apply for citizenship. Over 300,000 people applied for citizenship in the year ending June 2026.
