Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann revealed that the suspect deliberately targeted a group of kindergarteners in a park, Reuters reports. He said that the suspect allegedly stabbed three people in total using a kitchen knife. He killed a 41-year-old German bystander, a 2-year-old boy, and injured a 2-year-old girl. The child victims were of Moroccan and Syrian descent, respectively.
Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach added that three other people were wounded in the incident including a 61-year-old man, a child and a teacher.
The 28-year-old suspect, whose asylum application had been rejected, was arrested at the scene in Schoental park Wednesday morning. Herrmann said that he was supposed to voluntarily leave Germany in December after displaying a history of violent behavior, but instead stayed in the country and remained under psychiatric treatment.
"An initial search of his accommodation in the asylum shelter did not reveal any signs of radical Islamist tendencies but only medications consistent with his psychiatric treatment," Hermann added.
Police and German authorities do not believe that any other suspects were involved in the attack and that the Afghan man acted alone.
This attack follows a July incident in Germany when another Afghan immigrant went on a stabbing spree at an anti-Islam event, killing one police officer.
