California Gov. Gavin Newsom will remain in office following the state’s long-anticipated recall election Tuesday.

The recall election asked voters whether Newsom should be removed from his position, to which they were to mark “yes” or “no,” and gave voters who wanted him gone the choice of 46 alternatives. A majority of Californians have voted no, Fox News reports.

Newsom thanked California voters for keeping him.

"We said yes to science. We said yes to vaccines," Newsom said in brief remarks at a news conference. "We said yes to ending this pandemic. We said yes to people's right to vote without fear. We said yes to women’s constitutional right to decide."

Conservative talk radio host Larry Elder, who was the front runner among the 46 replacements, also shared a message with his supporters Tuesday night.

“Let’s be gracious in defeat,” Elder told his supporters Tuesday night after they booed when he mentioned Newsom, per NBC News. “We may have lost the battle, but we are going to win the war."

Newsom faced backlash and several crises throughout the pandemic, specifically when photos surfaced of him evading his own COVID-19 protocols at elite dinner parties. However, democrats across the country shelled out millions of dollars in campaign funds to help his cause.
