To the Editor:

In all of my 42 years as a legislator, both at the state and federal levels of government, campaign contributions have never been required, or even suggested as a way to get access to me.  Nor has there ever been a suggestion that my conduct has been influenced by any contributions in all of these years.

Mr. Novak’s October 11 column on the mid-term elections is the first time that even an insinuation has been made that lobbyists would have to open their wallets to gain access to me.  As a reporter with such an outstanding reputation, Mr. Novak owes it to me to reveal the identity of anyone who would make that kind of statement.

Sincerely,
Rep. Charles B. Rangel
