One of the most consistent allies to Israel in Congress who is also a Democrat, Rep. Brad Sherman of California, has warned that support for Israel in the US has been collapsing and posted a clip showing that since 2018, there has been a 67-point negative shift in polling when it comes to Americans' views on Israel.
"Every Israeli official and voter should watch this clip, and it needs to be translated into Hebrew. Yesterday, I spoke with the Israeli Ambassador. I don’t think he or the majority of Israelis realize what is at stake."
"It’s not just $3.8 billion of traditional annual aid. It’s access to U.S. weapons and diplomatic support. Israel has been unwilling to take even a few steps to improve its image around the world. They don’t fund their foreign ministry. Ben-Gvir in the cabinet poses an existential threat. Israel cannot survive with no friends in the world," he added. The anti-Israel sentiment found in much of the world and many parts of the American political system may be unjustified. I hear from Israelis that their actions are justified, and since they’re in the right, they have no problem. That shows an ignorance of Jewish history.
"Settler violence will continue until the relevant ministries are held by people who are really opposed to settler violence. The polling numbers that CNN reports will just get worse as long as settler violence continues," he added.
Although there has been a negative shift in Americans' views of Israel, the breakdown is still heavily split by party. According to a Pew Research poll, the GOP still has a more favorable view of Israel, with 58 to 41 percent favorable to unfavorable. With Democrats, eight in 10 have a negative view of Israel. The negative view of Israel is particularly pronounced in younger people.
The shift in negative views against Israel comes just nearly three years after October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists killed 1,200 Israelis, oftentimes using sexual violence and rape against their victims. President Donald Trump has usually been very warm with Israel, and the IDF has coordinated information as well as military support in the US' conflict with Iran.
The CNN segment that was shared by Sherman with an aggregation of polls showed that overall favorability of Israel has gone from +51 to -16, a 67-point swing.
