Russia has stepped up its crackdown on OnlyFans creators, with authorities targeting adult-content producers as the Kremlin continues its broader campaign promoting what it describes as traditional Russian values.

The crackdown has included arrests, raids, and criminal cases involving people accused of producing or distributing sexually explicit material online. While pornography can legally be viewed and stored in Russia, producing and distributing it is illegal.

Among those targeted is 21-year-old Sofya Vershinina, who was convicted in July of producing and sharing sexually explicit videos online. Prosecutors said she earned roughly £300,000 through OnlyFans and Telegram since January 2024, reports the. Daily Mail. She received a 3-year suspended sentence and a £45,000 fine after pleading guilty and expressing remorse.

Another OnlyFans creator, 24-year-old Anastasia Ovsyannikova, was arrested in June on suspicion of illegally producing and distributing pornography. German producer Ludwig Kritschker, 30, was arrested alongside her, with authorities searching his residence and seizing production equipment.

Diana Shurygina, 27, another sex worker profiled by the Mail, has also been arrested over allegations that she sold explicit material through OnlyFans. Police reportedly raided her apartment and seized cameras, sex toys and other equipment. She has been placed under house arrest and could face up to six years in prison.

The campaign extends beyond OnlyFans models. In June, Russian internet regulator Ekaterina Mizulina reported 22-year-old reality television personality Anastasia Bragina after she filmed herself walking naked through Moscow. Bragina was initially detained for 14 days before being rearrested on more serious pornography-related allegations.

Russian authorities have increasingly used laws governing pornography and online content as part of the country’s social agenda with critics say the laws are applied selectively, particularly against people involved in feminist and LGBTQ activism.

Russia has also targeted OnlyFans itself. The platform temporarily restricted Russian creators and customers following the invasion of Ukraine and Western sanctions in 2022, although it later restored account functionality where payment systems allowed it.
