Kerry had been living alone in a council house in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, following the death of his father last year. Neighbours in the Kimberworth Park estate said he was known locally as a quiet and polite person. Several people in the area described Kerry as “quiet and shy,” saying he would help neighbours by taking out their garbage bins or accepting parcels for them when needed.
Before the attack, Kerry worked an office job at an elevator company. In 2022, he appeared in a photo shared by company staff while taking part in a charity fundraiser for local sea cadets, holding a jar of Easter eggs. Staff at the company described him at the time as “part of the engine room” of the business.

His family has been known in the community for years, with several relatives having served in the military. His father, Paul Yates, previously worked as a research engineer in the steel industry and was described as highly intelligent. He later stopped working after losing a leg and was diagnosed with stomach cancer in his 60s.
