Authorities in northern Germany say five people were killed in a shooting Monday in the town of Stade, west of Hamburg, with police confirming a suspect has been taken into custody.

It’s still early, and details remain limited, but officials said the motive is not yet known. Local reports suggested the incident took place at a youth center in the town. Police have asked people in the local area to avoid the scene of the attack "for [their] own safety," reports the Daily Mail.

French outlet 24 reported that a male suspect was arrested, citing police sources. Some early reports mentioned the possibility of multiple suspects, though police have not confirmed that information.

In an update shared through its WhatsApp channel, local police said: "According to the current state of the investigation, a homicide occurred at a youth care facility on Dankersstraße, resulting in multiple victims.

"Five people were fatally injured, and others sustained injuries. As part of the immediate search and police operation, two suspected perpetrators, including the alleged shooter, were arrested.

"The investigation into the background and the exact sequence of events is ongoing."

Police said all five victims were adults and added there are no outstanding suspects believed to be at large. Authorities have not released the identities of those arrested or explained the role of the second detainee. It also remains unclear how many people were injured in the attack. Local media reported that two police helicopters circled over Stade's city center as the investigation continued. Stade, which has a population of around 50,000, is located in Lower Saxony west of Hamburg.
