Officials said roughly 50 strikes were conducted on the island, located in the Persian Gulf. The site is considered a critical hub for Iran’s oil shipments, accounting for about 90 percent of its crude exports.
President Donald Trump declined to comment directly when asked about the operation earlier in the day. Shortly after, he posted a warning on Truth Social tied to ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?” he said.
He added, “We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
Vice President J D Vance said the strikes were part of an existing plan and not a shift in US strategy. “My understanding, having talked to [war Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine] about this is, is that we were going to strike some military targets on Kharg Island. I believe we have done so,” Vance said.
“I don’t think the news about Kharg Island represents a change in strategy, or represents any change for the president of the United States. He continues to say the deadline is 8 o’clock.”
Elsewhere in Iran, additional strikes were reported on infrastructure, including bridges, an airport, and a petrochemical facility. Iranian media said at least two people were killed in a strike on a railway bridge in Kashan.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard responded with a warning, saying, “We will do something with the infrastructure of America and its partners that will deprive America and its allies of oil and gas in the region for years.” The statement added, “We have not and will not be the initiator of attacks on civilian targets; but we will not hesitate to retaliate against vile attacks on civilian facilities."
