Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said determining the circumstances of the attack and finding the killer is a top priority. "This is a matter of security in a country at war, where, as we can see, there are no completely safe places," he said in a statement on Telegram.
Parubiy, 54, was a member of parliament and served as parliamentary speaker from April 2016 to August 2019. He was also one of the leaders of the 2013-14 protests that pushed for closer ties with the European Union.
Officials did not immediately indicate if the killing was connected to the ongoing war with Russia, according to Reuters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Parubiy’s death in a post on X, writing, "Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko have just reported on the first known circumstances of a horrific murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy has been killed.”
"All necessary forces and means are engaged in the investigation and search for the killer,” Zelensky added.
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko also paid tribute, calling the murder a “profound loss” for Ukraine.
"You always remained a patriot of Ukraine and made a great contribution to the formation of our state," she said on X.
