ROD THOMSON: Trump's DOJ holds Democrats accountable for their anti-MAGA lawfare

Democrats and intelligence operatives went after people like General Michael Flynn and Peter Navarro to stop them, but also as a shot across the bow to keep all Republicans and Trump appointees in order.

America may yet get accountability for years of Democratic criminality. This in itself is historic. Most Americans who have watched the increasingly radical lawlessness and open lawfare of Democrats have resigned themselves to never seeing anyone held accountable, and fearing that lawfare against one political side would become the new normal.

But not with President Trump in the White House. The list of investigations his administration is undertaking gives life to the concept of justice for the truly powerful — not Indiana grandmothers who wandered into the Capitol's open doors on January 6, 2021.

The list from just the past few weeks is inspiring:

1) The Attorney General Pam Bondi's U.S. Department of Justice has empaneled a federal grand jury and issued sweeping information requests on the corrupt enterprise known as the Russian collusion hoax, going after Obama-era officials, including former FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and more. The investigation follows DNI Tulsi Gabbard issuing a criminal referral based on documents discovered that support the case. With an ongoing grand jury, the DOJ is not saying much.

But Gabbard's referral does. Called "The Intelligence Community suppression of intelligence showing 'Russian and criminal actors did not impact' the 2016 presidential election via cyber-attacks on infrastructure," Gabbard's office accused former President Barack Obama and his officials of covertly spinning up a "narrative that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help President Trump win" and then "selling it to the American people as though it were true." These are serious accusations against the most powerful people in America during the Obama presidency, after the president himself.

It all needs to come out with names attached.

2) The DOJ has launched a grand jury investigation of New York Attorney General Letitia James for her prosecution of the civil fraud case against Trump and her handling of a trial against the National Rifle Association. The investigation is in its early stages, but James' office has already been subpoenaed for documents.

In her campaign for Attorney General, James promised to target Trump (actually, all of the Democrats who were running promised to). He was sued before the 2024 election, "alleging that he misled banks, insurers, and others about his net worth to obtain loans, although none of the parties involved claimed to have been injured." Judge Arthur Engoron ruled against Trump and ordered an astonishing $454 million penalty.

That was the result, even though Trump paid back the banks' loans with interest on time, and the bankers expressed a desire to do business with the Trump organization again. There were no "victims."

3) Bondi also has appointed a special prosecutor to investigate alleged mortgage fraud by U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff and Letitia James. The AG tapped former acting U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., Ed Martin, to lead the prosecution of James and Schiff for potential mortgage fraud, bank fraud, and wire fraud. All three crimes carry jail terms up to 30 years.

4) Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is coming under increased scrutiny in his prosecution of Trump on fictionalized felony charges over which box was checked in paper filings. The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan, launched an oversight investigation last week into what they describe as "politically motivated prosecutions by state and local officials" in Bragg's office.

5) FBI agents who led the J6 investigations that shackled and jailed patriotic Americans and grandmas, along with a few miscreants, have been forced out of their jobs. Last week, the FBI announced that former FBI acting director Brian Driscoll had been forced out of the bureau, along with Walter Giardina, a special agent at the bureau, and Steven Jensen, the acting director in charge of the Washington Field Office.

Driscoll was acting director of the FBI until the confirmation of FBI Director Kash Patel. Jensen played a key role in the January 6 investigations. And Giardino was deeply involved in the investigation of Trump advisor Peter Navarro.

6) Sanctuary cities — which are open violations of federal law and never should have been allowed to exist — are being targeted on several fronts. President Trump signed an executive order on April 28 called Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens. The EO enforces federal law regarding sanctuary jurisdictions.

Following that, the administration has threatened to withhold federal funding from sanctuary jurisdictions that do not comply with federal immigration law, including not cooperating with federal law enforcement. And the DOJ is pursuing legal actions while the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ratcheted up operations within sanctuary cities.

Democrats and intelligence operatives went after people like General Michael Flynn and Peter Navarro to stop them, but also as a shot across the bow to keep all Republicans and Trump appointees in order. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer infamously warned Trump in 2017: "Let me tell you: You take on the intelligence community — they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you."

These actions add up to a complete reversal of the status quo, showing that everyone — not just the powerless or one political side — is subject to the laws of the land and will be held accountable. Weak-kneed Republicans and talkers who are afraid that these actions will set bad precedents need to wake up and get a grip on the reality that already exists. These bad precedents were set over the past nine years by Democrats and Deep Staters.

What Trump and his administration and Congressional Republicans are doing adds up to the good and righteous precedent America needs going forward. And it could curtail future lawfare.
