Trump gives Putin '10 or 12 days' to agree to ceasefire with Ukraine

"I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today," Trump said.

President Donald Trump says he's dramatically shortened his proposed ceasefire deadline for Russia in the war against Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing a lack of progress and continued violence.

Speaking during his visit to Scotland for a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said the original 50-day timeline he previously offered Putin has now been reduced to less than two weeks.

“There’s no reason in waiting,” Trump said Monday. “We just don’t see any progress being made.”

While the president had earlier warned that failure to reach a ceasefire within 50 days would trigger US secondary tariffs of up to 100 percent on goods from countries continuing business with Russia, he now says that deadline will be accelerated.

“I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days from today,” he said Monday.

“I’ve spoken to President Putin a lot, I’ve gotten along with him very well,” Trump said. “He goes out and starts launching rockets into some city, like Kyiv, and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever, you have bodies lying all over the street.”

“I’m very disappointed in Putin,” Trump said. “I’m going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number, because I think I already know the answer what’s going to happen.”

Russia previously dismissed the original 50-day deadline as “unacceptable” following its announcement from the White House, reports CBS.

Trump also questioned the value of further negotiations with the Kremlin. “I’m not so interested in talking anymore,” Trump said, saying that conversations with Putin had failed to produce any meaningful results. “We’ll have a nice conversation, and then the next day they go and kill more Ukrainians.”

In addition to Ukraine, Trump commented on the situation in Gaza, saying the US would increase humanitarian efforts. “Some of those kids are, that’s real starvation stuff,” Trump said. “I see it. And you can’t fake that. So we’re going to be even more involved.”
