After an Afghan migrant rammed into a crowd in Munich this past week, injuring dozens, a toddler and mother have died from their injuries. This comes as police are investigating the attack as being religiously motivated.
According to the German outlet BR24, a 37-year-old mother and her small two-year-old girl have died due to their injuries after the 24-year-old man deliberately drove into a crowd of demonstrators.
Authorities said that suspect Farhad N. is from Kabul and was born in 2001. He applied for asylum in 2016, however, he was still allowed to remain in Germany. The incident was mentioned by US Vice President JD Vance this week as an example of the devastating impacts of mass migration in the West.
"Of all the pressing challenges that the nations represented here face, I believe there is nothing more urgent than mass migration today," Vance said on Friday at the Munich Security Conference, just one day after the attack. He offered prayers for those that were injured in the attack and said that the suspect was already known to police and had a criminal history.
The mother was an employee in the city of Munich, and Mayor Dieter Reiter spoke about the shocking incident in a statement on Saturday.
According to BR24, translated from German, the official said, "Unfortunately, the worst fears have come true. The two-year-old girl and her mother, who were both seriously injured in the brutal attack on the demonstration on Thursday, have died. My thoughts are with the family of the murdered woman and her relatives and friends."
Reiter went onto explain that the 37-year-old mother was an employee of the city and that she had been protesting for worker's rights at the time of the attack.
Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz posted on X in German, "I am deeply shocked and saddened by the death of the small child and the woman who succumbed to their injuries after the attack in Munich."
"It is unimaginable what the relatives are going through. My deepest condolences go out to them. The country mourns with them,"
