Keir Starmer has now resigned as MP for Holborn and St. Pancras after representing the district in Parliament for 11 years. This comes after he resigned as prime minister, clearing the way for Manchester's Andy Burnham.
Starmer released a statement, saying that he has "had time to reflect and consider" his future and that "now is the right time to step down as MP for Holborn and St. Pancras and hand the baton over to a successor."
He said that it had been "an honour and privilege to represent the best constituency in the country since taking over over from the great Frank Dobson 11 years ago. But it is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs, including defence, security, trade, and technology in a fast changing world."
Starmer said he would "continue working with others" as he has "done over many decades to tackle violence against women and girls." On the debate over whether or not trans women are women, Starmer has said that no, "a woman is an adult human female," and backed the high court in their ruling that gender equality laws bestow protections to women and not men who identify as women.
The former MP, however, has also called the British Islamic community "the face of modern Britain," though many of the women in that community walk the streets fully veiled and covered and are made to follow Sharia law which makes severe modesty demands on women and restricts their rights.
Starmer said the was proud of the work he's done, thanked his team and his constituency. "There will be a process to appoint my successor ahead of a by-election," he said. "Whoever is lucky enough to become the Labour candidate here will have my full support and backing and I will continue to give my full support to the Prime Minister and this Labour government."
During his time in office, Starmer was slammed for out of control mass migration, put in place strict social media laws for young people, and was said by President Donald Trump to be pandering to Muslim voters. He also spearheaded a plan to let criminals out of jail sooner to make room for Britons arrested for their speech on social media.
