Zelensky announced the plan on Thursday after speaking to allies at the Ramstein Air Base, however he did not specify an exact date for the trip per The Telegraph. It would mark the first time Starmer will visit Ukraine since he became Prime Minister in July of last year.
Zelensky said to reporters: "The British look at it positively, but I will talk in detail with the Prime Minister about it at our meeting. He will be visiting Ukraine, he will have a visit to Ukraine, and we will talk."
This development comes immediately after Starmer met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday to discuss “the importance of offering Ukraine security guarantees” going forward after United States President-elect Donald Trump takes office at the end of the month. Trump has been vocal about his desire to end the war between Ukraine and Russia altogether to bring peace to the world and avoid nuclear conflict.
“The two leaders reaffirmed their desire to coordinate closely in order to support Ukraine for as long as necessary,” a readout of the meeting stated. “They stressed the importance of continuing to supply the equipment needed to defend Ukrainian territory, and of guaranteeing sustainable financial support for Ukraine beyond 2025.”
Macron had discussed the possibility of deploying peacekeeping troops to post-war Ukraine with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk last month.
