Two bodies found in Dublin's Grand Canal near migrant encampment

Two men in their 40s were found dead in Dublin's Grand Canal on Saturday morning near a makeshift refugee camp.

Irish law enforcement responded to multiple reports of a body in the canal at Grand Parade around 8 am, according to the Irish Times. Both men, identified by authorities and believed to be Irish, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Post Millennial’s Andy Ngo recently reported on the area of the immigrant encampment where he was told to “Go back to China.”

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The men were reportedly living in tents near the area, across from a makeshift refugee camp where International Protection Applicants have been sleeping. Residents at the camp said they were unsure of what led to the deaths of the two men but mentioned that the previous night was cold and rainy.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) commented on the incident, stating, “The DRHE has been in contact with An Garda Síochána and is awaiting confirmation of the person’s identities before we can confirm if they were known to homeless services.”

“We encourage members of the public to download the Rough Sleeper Alert app to assist teams in supporting people most at risk,” DRHE added.

Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan commented on the incident and highlighted the dangers for people living on the streets, noting, “Garda are still investigating the circumstances. However, if the deceased were people living in tents, whether they were locals or international protection applicants, it underlines the danger for people who are living on the streets.”
