The young woman was convicted last week of sending "insulting and threatening" messages to one of the rapists who is still at large, a justice spokeswoman confirmed to local German outlet Die Welt. She had reportedly obtained his number from Snapchat on which it had been circulating. She proceeded to send the rapist messages on WhatsApp calling him a "dishonorable rapist pig" and a "disgusting freak," per Hamburger Abendblatt. She also warned that he would "not be able to go anywhere anymore" without being beaten up.
10 men were tried last November for the brutal gang rape of an intoxicated 15-year-old girl. They took turns repeatedly assaulting her in the attack which lasted over 2 hours. One of them stole her phone and wallet. The perpetrators also allegedly filmed parts of the rape, although the footage was deleted before investigators could obtain it.
Of the 10 defendants, 5 were German citizens. The others were migrants from Syria Montegro, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Armenia. One defendant was convicted and sentenced to 2 years and 9 months in prison and another was acquitted. The rest of the 8 perpetrators, aged 16-20 at the time of the attack, were convicted and handed suspended sentences, also known as probation, and 60 hours of community service each. The judge overseeing the case noted that none of the defendants expressed remorse over the attack, per Die Welt.
The 20-year-old woman who sent the "insulting messages" will face imprisonment for 3 days beginning Friday in the Hahnöfersand youth detention centre, meaning she will be behind bars longer than most of the rapists who received suspended sentences.
