Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on Sunday called for national election reforms including photo ID requirements, the banning of ballot harvesting and only allowing U.S. citizens to vote.

In a CBS News interview, Raffensperger said only American citizens should be allowed to vote in elections.

“Now you see cities are trying to push noncitizen voting,”  he said. “I believe only American citizens should be participating in our voting and that’s supported by a wide majority of all Americans.”

Indeed, as previously reported by Human Events News, several states in the U.S. are pushing for non-citizen voting, something that has been a long-standing debate with the recent increase in immigration - both legal and illegal.

So far, efforts to expand non-citizen voting don’t apply to national elections for president or Congress, nor to state offices like governor or state legislator. However, democrats have brought this to the table.

States where local jurisdictions allow non-citizens to vote or are considering doing so include Maryland, California, Illinois, Vermont, District of Columbia, New York and Massachusetts.

On the other hand, some states, including Alabama, Arizona, Colorado and Florida, adopted rules that would preempt any attempts to pass laws to allow noncitizens to vote, Fox News reports.

“Nationwide, there should be a law that bans ballot harvesting,” Raffensperger said. “I don’t think that ballot harvesting is good. The only person that should touch your ballot is you and the election official.”

Host Margaret Brennan pointed out that one of the bills Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are pushing — the Freedom to Vote Act — promotes "a national standard for states that have an ID requirement for in-person voting. You could use a bank statement or utility bill."

"It does not have photo ID, and photo ID is the most secure way of ... making sure that you can identify who the voter is, and I think that's very important," Raffensperger responded. "And then they also want same-day registration, and that's just, you know, pretty difficult for any election official to manage. And I think that undermines trust in elections."
