The CDC on Monday shortened the COVID-19 isolation time to five days and shortened the quarantine length for close contacts.

Those who test positive for COVID-19 are now recommended to isolate for five days and if they are asymptomatic, they may then leave quarantine and mask up for five days, Just the News reports.

The CDC said that data shows the virus is transmitted “early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after.”

If a vaccinated person is exposed to the virus, the CDC does not recommend they isolate. For those who are unvaccinated and exposed, or those who have not yet received the booster, the CDC shortened the quarantine period to 5 days after exposure and recommended wearing a mask for the following five days when in public.

The CDC still recommends wearing a mask in public places regardless of vaccination status.

“The Omicron variant is spreading quickly and has the potential to impact all facets of our society,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said.

“CDC’s updated recommendations for isolation and quarantine balance what we know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided by vaccination and booster doses. These updates ensure people can safely continue their daily lives,” she continued. “Prevention is our best option: get vaccinated, get boosted, wear a mask in public indoor settings, in areas of substantial and high community transmission, and take a test before you gather.”
