The Biden administration announced Monday that they will not send any American government officials to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that while American athletes will be able to compete, there would be no delegation of American officials, the New York Times reports.
She said the boycott is a response to human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
“This is just an indication that it cannot be business as usual,” Psaki said. “That does not mean that is the end of the concerns we will raise about human rights abuses.”
“We feel this sends a clear message,” she added.
