Joe Biden acknowledged that the collapse of Afghanistan to the Taliban occurred “more quickly” than his administration anticipated.
“Truth is, this unfolded more quickly than we anticipated,” Biden said in an address to Americans from the White House, per Just the News.
He said that his national security team is keeping an eye on the situation in Afghanistan and taking steps to execute plans already put in place, including contingency plans regarding the collapse that is happening.
Biden called the mission in Afghanistan counterterrorism, not counterinsurgency or nation building.
He added that if Afghan forces can’t fight off the Taliban now, there’s no chance they’d be able to down the road or that U.S. forces would help.
