The Department of Defense has now released a statement about the four service members involved in last night's tragedy. One sailor remains unaccounted for, officials said.
Though suspected shooter James Holmes was wearing ballistic gear and armor when he entered the theater, according to police reports, he had no past or present affiliation with the military, the Pentagon said.
Here's the statement:
" The Department of Defense is deeply saddened by the news of the tragic incident at the Aurora Mall Movie Theater in Aurora, Colo. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families of those impacted by this event.
One sailor was injured and one, known to have been at the theatre that evening, is currently unaccounted for. Two airmen were injured in the incident. The Navy and the Air Force are working with the families of these service members to ensure they have the care and attention they need.
We can also confirm that the alleged gunman in this incident, James Holmes, is not a past or current member of any branch or component of the U.S. Armed Forces. "
Several news outlets are reporting that U.S. troops may be among the 50 victims killed or injured during the tragic theater shooting in Aurora, Colo. last night.
Colorado Springs is home to the Fort Carson Army post, which is base for thousands of active soldiers, as well as elements of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, and Army National Guard.
The DoD has a strict policy that prevents release of such information until 24 hours after family members have been notified, but I've called the Pentagon for the latest information as it comes available.
