Trailing by more than 20 percentage points just a week ago, based on exit polls, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is projected to win the first-in-the-South primary in South Carolina, multiple news organizations such as ABC News and FOX News are reporting.

Many South Carolinians made up their minds during this past week and Gingrich’s debate performances swayed many.

Early exit polls seem to indicate those debates allowed voters to see Gingrich as a combative fighter of conservative causes who can battle the mainstream media and President Obama in a general election.
