Sorry Dirty Harry, the most powerful handgun in the world is no longer a .44 Magnum. Several handgun cartridges are now more powerful than the .44, most notably, the .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum. When the .44 Magnum was called “the most powerful handgun in the world,” its standard load produced about 900 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. Today, the .500 S&W Magnum will produce almost 2,600 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle.
