Despite Repblican dreams to draft Dr. Antonia Novello, former Yonker Mayor Spencer remains the leading GOP contender, with his status as such recently confirmed (sort of) by New York Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.

Bruno, it will be remembered, first presciently urged Jeanine Pirro to exit the Senate race and run instead for state attorney general.

Bruno now tells the Poughkeepsie Journal that “he doubted whether Edward Cox, son-in-law of the late President Richard Nixon, would re-enter the race for U.S. Senate.”

Cox was the apparent frontrunner to get the Republican nomination until Pirro toyed with the idea of getting in the race, and then he “suspended” his campaign in October when Gov. Pataki endorsed Pirro.  And now, with Cox still unwilling to re-enter the race, Bruno told the Journal that Spencer is “very electable.”
