The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America released a four-page letter today in defense of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. The group argued that the left has unfairly attacked Alito’s views on the relationship between religion and state.

The letter, detailed with several important religious-freedom and Establishment Clause cases, was addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (R.-Pa.) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D.-Vt.), ranking member on the committee.

It cites as a concern the left’s contention that Alito’s views about religion are out of the mainstream. The letter also attempts to counter the belief among liberals that Alito will undo the protections of religious minorities.

“As members of a minority faith community within this great nation, we write to you to state that we believe these assertions are misleading distortions of Judge Alito’s record and that calling for his rejection based upon these assertions is wrong.”
