In reporting that Bill Wichterman, former legislative director to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R.-Tenn.), had joined the Washington, D.C., law firm of Covington and Burling, I also noted that some conservatives look on the blue-chip firm suspiciously because past partners included former Secretary of State Dean Acheson and Alger Hiss, the notorious Communist agent in the State Department.

While Wichterman appreciated the mention, he wrote me that Alger Hiss was not a partner in the firm, that it was his brother Donald Hiss who worked at the firm. He is correct on that count, but Donald Hiss was also named by Communist-turned-patriot Whittaker Chambers as a former member of the Communist Party from whom he collected dues.
