Chairman John Boehner's plan to give federal funds to schoolchildren displaced by Katrina was slapped down 21-26 last night by the House Education and Workforce Committee.
Had the proposal been accepted, nearly 300,000 children would have had access to $6700 per year to attend a school of their choosing.
Pushing the first-ever voucher like program off the GOP's table were four House Republicans who joined Democrats in opposing Boehner's measure: Todd Platts (Pa.), Judy Biggert (Ill.), Bob Inglis (S.C.) and John Kuhl (N.Y.).
