Pat Robertson mused on the 700 Club about Venezuelan president Chavez, “You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.”

Look, Pat wasn’t serious in 2003 about nuking the State Department (“maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up”) and nobody outside Berkeley believes for a minute he was serious about Chavez. Michael Savage says worse about every 38 minutes.

Despite high oil prices and populist appeal, Gustavo Coronel argues, “We must remember that the worst enemy of Hugo Chavez is . . . Hugo Chavez.” He gives all kinds of examples, including:

The alignment of Chavez with Fidel Castro has been a personal decision for which he is starting to pay a heavy price. Many Venezuelans who might have been neutral or even sympathetic to Chavez now openly despise him because of what they perceive as a national humiliation. Cubans sent by Castro staged an armed invasion of Venezuela in the 1960's but were thrown back. Today Chavez has opened the doors to the failed invaders of the past, giving Castro enormous subsidies and privileges which will probably be defined by history as an act of treason.

So, cheer up, Pat and keep those asbestos undergarments on for a few more days.
