In a nationally televised address Tuesday at Ft. Bragg North Carolina, President Bush expressed his appreciation to the nation's military as well as their families. He also encouraged all of America to take time on Independence Day to make their own expression of thanks.

"To the soldiers in this hall and our servicemen and women across the globe, I thank you for your courage under fire and your service to our nation," he said. "I thank our military families; the burden of war falls especially hard on you. In this war we have lost good men and women who left our shores to defend freedom and did not live to make the journey home.”

On a day, which commemorated the first anniversary of the handover of sovereignty from the U.S.-led coalition to Iraq’s interim government, the president emphasized the progress that’s been made in the past year and the promise of continued success against the still-potent insurgency.

Urging continued patience from the American public for the difficult work that still needs to be accomplished, he responded affirmatively, "Amid all this violence, I know Americans ask the question: Is the sacrifice worth it? It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country."

The continued backing of our governments’ attempts to spread democracy and freedom in the Middle East region are critical at this particular time, and all efforts to support this effort are laudable and should be encouraged.

Notwithstanding, lending support to our troops is even a better idea, at all times. It deserves special attention, now during our national Fourth of July holiday, in which we, as Americans celebrate our heritage that’s built on a constitution that is the oldest in the world and a model for freedom seeking societies everywhere.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.” On this holiday weekend, and in the future, think about our troops and what they are achieving for you and for America, for the cause of freedom. And, if you are so inclined give something back to them as a way of saying thanks. Below are websites that are actively supporting our military.
