After a filibuster that lasted nearly two years, the Senate Wednesday confirmed constitutionalist California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the important D.C. Circuit. The vote was 56 to 43, with Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.) the only Democrat voting for Brown.
Before the vote, nervous Democratic Senators Teddy Kennedy (Mass.) and Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) lambasted Brown for a speech she once gave in which she described the New Deal as America??¢â???¬â???¢s own little ??¢â???¬?????Socialist revolution.??¢â???¬ Said Kennedy: ??¢â???¬?????Despite what Justice Brown thinks, laws that prevent corporate abuses and protect the environment, workers, consumers and public safety are not the result of a ??¢â???¬????Socialist revolution,??¢â???¬â???¢ and we have a right to expect that judges will enforce them.??¢â???¬ Said Schumer: ??¢â???¬?????Were she a legislator, she could not only continue to fulminate, as she has, about the New Deal??¢â???¬â???¢s being a triumph of our Socialist revolution, she could actually introduce legislation to overturn it.??¢â???¬ Eat your heart out, boys.
