Meanwhile, House conservatives sent a sharp warning to the Senate not to include the Craig-Kennedy bill in the Iraq-Afghanistan supplemental. Led by Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R.-Ariz.), 73 Republican representatives signed a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R.-Ill.), urging him to make the case for them.

"We have written to Speaker Hastert asking him to advise the Senate and the President of our strong opposition to piling amnesty legislation on to a crucial wartime supplemental appropriations bill," Hayworth said. "It would be the height of legislative arrogance and irresponsibility for Congress to approve funding to secure the borders of Iraq and Afghanistan against terrorism and in the same legislation rip a gaping hole in our own national borders." Among the signers: Homeland Security Chairman Chris Cox (Calif.), Armed Services Chairman Duncan Hunter (Calif.), Republican Study Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.), Walter Jones (N.C.), Dana Rohrabacher (Calif.) and Tom Tancredo (Colo.).
