1. Robert M. Cutler, who was President Eisenhower??¢â???¬â???¢s national security adviser from 1953-58. (Although the National Security Council was created in 1949, it did not have a full-time operating head until Eisenhower created the position of adviser four years later.)

2. Henry Kissinger, national security adviser from 1969-74, and secretary of State from 1973-77. (Kissinger served simultaneously in both jobs from 1973-74) and Colin Powell, who was national security adviser from 1987-88 and has served as secretary of State since 2000.

3. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, national security adviser to President Ford from 1974-76 and to President George H.W. Bush from 1988-92.

4. Dr. Rice, who assumed the position in 2000.

5. Ronald Reagan, who had four national security advisers from 1980-88: Richard V. Allen, William P. Clark, Adm. John Poindexter, and Powell.
