McCarthy Articles Expose Historian’s Scandalous Work Thank you so much for this favorable article by Mr. Evans ["How Senate Historian Botched Data on McCarthy," HUMAN EVENTS, May 26, page 12]. Next to Billy Mitchell, Joe McCarthy is perhaps in line as the second most maligned of all patriots and deserves better from history than the label "McCarthyism," which was coined by Soviet Intelligence to blunt his serious and most needed investigation into Communist subversion. What a pity he was not vindicated before his death. As FDR once said, some of his best friends were indeed Communists who no doubt were given free access to classified information through a breakdown in Security during and following World War II. The 50-year blanket of secrecy about the hearings was a monumental political mistake that heavily favored continued subversion. Was Donald Ritchie an actual observer of the McCarthy hearings? Is he a revisionist history buff? Did Sen. McCarthy ever falsely accuse anyone who was later proven to be innocent? Americans may now have a chance to learn the truth, but I suspect that those that are still Democrats are so brainwashed they could not even recognize it.

—Bob Rowland, Irving, Tex.

A fine example of history being written by the victors.

—Thomas Dahlquist, St Paul, Minn.

I was a private at Fort Dix when Pvt. Shine was inducted into the Army. I’ve always said, in spite of the 50-year scourging of the Senator, "McCarthy was right!" and I firmly believe so. His methods were a little over the top by today’s standards (unless one is a liberal) but there were and are now legions more enemies of freedom in our midst who love communism. Can there be any doubt that he was right about Hollywood? When they did the TV "documentary" of his saga and demise, I couldn’t help but think about the Soviet dissidents who were drugged into oblivion, ending up in a mental institution.

—Joe Ruisi, Little River, S.C.

Too many conservatives foolishly use the term McCarthyism as an invective. When used correctly it is quite honorable. It is a shame that our United States Senate today lacks the courage to demand answers to scores of executive actions and programs that obviously injure America. Such as: Not securing our borders, allowing UNESCO to dictate America’s school curriculum, importing labor rather than training our own people, de-industrializing industries that are crucial, and failing to trust bust monopolies from oil to media. We need more senators like Joe McCarthy to call the meeting to order. America’s sovereignty is bleeding profusely.

—G. Richard Arnold, Santa Cruz, Calif.

Thanks for pointing out the recent disinformation pertaining to the McCarthy transcripts and the smearing of his character. Every article I’ve read in the recent news of the release of the transcripts of the hearings has made me think, ‘that’s funny, I don’t remember it like that.’ And it has bothered me very much. No doubt there are more Communist subversives or sympathizers in this country who are able (encouraged?) to get false stories like that into the newspapers. There are more lies than facts in the sheets and on TV anymore and I rely on your publication to sort it out for me. Thanks a million!

Article Underscores Tax Agenda of Democrats I loved Stephen Moore’s recent article, ["Remembering the Real Economic Legacy of JFK," HUMAN EVENTS, May 19, page 7] in the May 19 issue. It is brilliant. I would be interested in hearing the responses from the usual Democratic flacks (or "flakes") on the article. . . Ted Kennedy, Tom Daschle, Nancy Pelosi, Dick Gephardt, et al. And also those moderate Republican Senators Chafee, Snow and McCain who did not support the President’s tax package. I know it’s probably too late, but it would make interesting reading if you could make it your Page 3 ‘Question of the Week’ in a forthcoming issue. Great piece! Keep up the good work!!!!

North Captures Byrd’s Disrespectful Demeanor In regards to the "Dishonorable" Senator’s constipation of the brain and diarrhea of the mouth ["Byrd Droppings," HUMAN EVENTS, May 19, page 12], he’s proven the best he can come up with is to disrespect our troops and President. Maybe if he spent a month or two "embedded" with a couple of units in the field he may have a better appreciation for having the freedom to "run" his mouth. Byrd is like the "Jerry Springer" of the Senate. Having the same low "common" denominator. Wallowing in the trash like hogs to the slop. I’m losing more respect for the so-called Democrats every day. I’m sure the President can’t help but laugh at all this. Maybe some day when the Democrats can stop pissing and moaning long enough to actually get some work done, they may actually do a service for their country. Until then I won’t be holding my breath. The President has something they don’t—it’s called faith. You can actually see their little "demons" come alive when they (whiners) open their mouth. It’s really funny. He’s stood above it all with grace and humor. Something certain senators could learn from. Meanwhile we’ll sit back and enjoy the show. God Bless our beloved troops and America!!

Reader Appreciates Informative Coverage I enjoy your publication, every issue of which seems to have something that really hits home for me. I know a letter like this should cover only one subject, but I want to make some comments about two. What is an "assault weapon?" ["Gun Rights on a Roll," HUMAN EVENTS, May 12, page 1.] I believe it is the way in which it is used rather than whether it is big and ugly and automatic or has a large capacity of ammunition. Years ago, I was told that it was against the law to own a functioning, fully automatic weapon, however collectors could apply for a federal permit to keep one. I do agree with this. I don’t believe individuals need machine guns for protection. It was interesting that the day the Brady Bill passed, there were three or four murders in Georgia, yet not one of them involved a gun. We need to look at the history of Great Britain’s gun control, which neither reduced crime nor took guns away from the criminal element. Any restrictions on this subject will be just the beginning of the road for taking away all weapons from law-abiding citizens. Your article ["Licensing Illegal Aliens To Drive," HUMAN EVENTS, May 12, page 24] really gets to me. I can’t get passed the word—"Illegal." If they are illegal, deport them without ceremony. There are too many ways people can enter this country legally and be welcomed.
