PRO-LIFE: Prosecutors in California have charged Scott Peterson with two counts of murder, not one, because, they say, he killed his unborn child as well as his wife Laci. This has upset some NOW zealots, but the public seems to agree. Fox News/Opinion Dynamics pollsters over April 22-23 asked 900 registered voters, "If Scott Peterson is convicted of killing his pregnant wife Laci, do you think he should be charged with one count of homicide for murdering his wife or two counts of homicide for murdering both his wife and unborn son?" An astonishing 84% said that Peterson should face two counts whereas only 7% said he should face one count.

BUSH’S LEGACY: Conservatives have been pleased by President Bush’s emphasis on abstinence for preventing unwed motherhood and the spread of disease, and some House conservatives want to write that legacy into legislation authorizing the President’s AIDS initiative for Africa. When HR 1298 comes to the House floor May 1, said Concerned Women for America Vice President for Government Relations Michael Schwartz, amendments will be offered to do so because "without a clear mandate, future administrations will be able to use AIDS prevention dollars for ineffective condom-based programs, rather than lifesaving ones based on abstinence and faithfulness." Pro-family Americans also want a clause inserted into the bill that will allow faith-based organizations which refuse to distribute condoms to receive money as part of this program, said CWA.

CONSULAR FOLLIES: The matricula consular, an ID card being issued by Mexican consulates in this country to illegal immigrants, is a "worthless form of identification that is being used by criminals to hide their true identities," said John Marlborough, a U.S. Border Patrol official in Southern California, in a letter to the San Bernardino County Sheriff. In fact, said Marlborough, illegal aliens often have more than one card. Said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), "Law enforcement agencies have been sold a bill of goods by the Mexican government, which has convinced them that matricula cards are being issued only after a person’s identity has been verified. What is much more certain is that a person presenting a matricula card without a valid immigration document, is, in fact, an illegal alien and is violating federal law by being here."

FRIST BEHIND SANTORUM: Attempts to force Republicans to dump Sen. Rick Santorum (R.-Pa.) from the homosexual activists were dealt blows by top Republicans at the White House and then by the top Senate GOP leader. Sen. Bill Frist (R.-Tenn.) said in response to a reporter’s question about Santorum on April 29, "People who work with Rick day in, day out understand he’s a man of caring, compassion and tolerance. Strongly religious, a man of great faith, an effective and strong leader. In terms of questioning his leadership ability or position, it’s a non-issue."

DEADLY DUO: A supposedly Catholic institution, Mount St. Mary’s College, has invited two pro-abortion Democratic congresswomen to speak at its graduation ceremonies in Los Angeles May 10. Sisters Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D.-Calif.) and Rep. Linda Sanchez (D.-Calif.) "have built their political careers on a platform that flies in the face of what the Catholic Church teaches on the sanctity of life," said American Life League President Judie Brown. ALL has asked both the college president, Jacqueline Powers Doud, and Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles, to cancel the invitations. "If Ms. Doud really cared about her students, and if Cardinal Mahony really cared about his flock, they would cancel the Sanchez sisters’ commencement speech immediately," said Brown. "If they do not, we will lead a coalition of those willing to protest this despicable act."

OUT OF TOUCH: Democratic candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio) said last month, "Combined, the administration’s tax cuts and aggressive foreign policy will leave our nation’s needs unmet. Already, this administration’s policy has led to cuts in spending on important domestic needs such as education, health care, veterans benefits, and child care. Our nation’s needs will continue to go unmet as long as this administration continues to press forwarded with a flawed economic plan and a dangerous, aggressive foreign policy." Of course, federal spending has shot up dramatically under President Bush, who has especially favored large increases in education and health care.
