Toomey Article Highlights Political Dilemma For GOP
As a former Pennsylvania resident, the state is still a "blue collar" mind-set state ["Conservative Will Challenge Specter," HUMAN EVENTS, March 3, page 1]. Toomey better get the bucks and be good. Who will the Democrats run? They have the governorship now. Why is Sen. Rick Santorum (R.-Pa.) backing Specter?
Specter is a weasel on hard questions. I can't picture him on the same stage as Bush. Also the teacher's union is powerful; I used to belong to one of them. They aren't backing a Republican. Good article!
Coulter Fan Likes His 'Law and Order'
Every week I look forward to Ann Coulter's columns. It is the first thing I read in every edition of HUMAN EVENTS and I ordinarily agree with every scathing word. This week ["Left Won't Succeed on Talk Radio," HUMAN EVENTS, Februaty 24, page 6], I must object to her lambasting of the television show "Law and Order."
Certainly, it leans slightly more to the left than the right, but not every episode is a white Christian with a gun. There have been many solid pro-life and pro-gun arguments made by the show during its run, even to my own astonishment when I was new to the show and figured for sure it would go to the left like every other show on television. It is not nearly as liberal as many of the other shows on network television, some of which Miss Coulter also names.
And any leanings the show might have to the left should be offset by a public service that "Law and Order" performs on a weekly basis. Every single episode portrays defense lawyers as they actually are: slimy creatures that attempt to circumvent, bend, and trump the laws of our country in whatever creative way their brains can imagine to try and enable their criminal clientele to get away with murder.
If nothing else, "Law and Order" succeeds at showing its viewing audience the despicable nature of trial lawyers.
Hopefully this will make the liberals in the audience aware of the horrible things the trial lawyer lobby is attempting to push through Congress with the help of Sen. John Edwards (D.-N.C.) and his co-conspirators in the Democratic Party.
Not Anti-Gun, But Anti-Criminal
Your recent article on Michael Moore ["Bowling for Columbine Throws One Too Many Gutterballs," HUMAN EVENTS, February 3, 2003] was critical of his movie Bowling for Columbine.
Although I agree that guns can serve a useful purpose in terms of stopping crime, I must disagree with the notion that all regulations on guns are bad. Background checks during gun shows would ensure that no guns are sold through these events to those who are banned from buying them.
Some criminals no doubt would get their gun illegally elsewhere but probably not all of them and we shouldn't make it easy for them to acquire these weapons. This is a commonplace solution.
Second, the idea that we shouldn't add any new gun laws, such as the one I mentioned, because there are 20,000 gun laws on the books is misleading. These 20,000 gun laws are of course many of the same laws but in different states, counties or cities. Indeed there are probably 20,000 laws against theft in the US or against burglary.
I am not anti-gun, I served my nation proudly in the military first in a MI [Military Intelligence] unit and then firing 105mm self-propelled howitzers, but I don't want criminals getting guns.
'Endangered Species' Or Endangered Marines?
In regards to your recent article on Marine training exercises ["Endangered Species Envelop Marines in California," HUMAN EVENTS, February 24, page 5], as an infantry officer assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division from 1995 to 1998, at the Marine Air Ground Combat Center in 29 Palms, Calif., the issue of endangered species protection was one of contention for us, that often created situations by which hundreds of Marines were unable to continue live-fire training due to the presence of a single desert turtle.
While hundreds of Marines baked in the oppressive heat of the desert, all live fire operations would cease, and a wildlife expert would be called in to assess the situation, and attempt to relocate the animal.
In the end, it was obvious that the life of one desert turtle was as significant as the training necessary to ensure the safety of the lives of hundreds of Marines in the future.
What a bunch of garbage. Yes, we are quite a nation. It's more important to protect to Riverside shrimp, snapper, or whatever the heck it was, then to train our military. Guess I am glad that I am almost 60.
After being spit upon after returning from Vietnam, dumb me, I thought defending our county was the right thing to do. I have questioned some of the lunkheads and just plain dumb people who live in a society that was won via our military and how they continue to be such a force in our county.
I'd like to see liberals survive in Iraq. Oh well, I will be dead and gone when someone else takes over because the Spotted skipper toad is more important than a marine who can defend our freedom.
Free Miguel Estrada From Senate Democrats
Thank you for the great article on the Democrats cowardly and heinous actions on Mr. Estrada ["Democrats Filibuster Estrada for No Good Reason," HUMAN EVENTS, February 17, page 5] and their obstruction to any of President Bush's nominations or policy initiatives.
I hope and pray that [Senate Majority Leader Bill] Frist [R.-Tenn.] has the "fire in his belly" to stand up to the bullying tactics of Daschle and call this man's bluff. Time will really tell if the Republicans are the majority party or not. God help us gain a broader Republican majority in the Senate's 2004 election because, if we don't stand firm now, we haven't earned the confidence of the people.
I hope you will continue to make this point. It is so important that the American people realize it is liberal democrats who are jamming up the wheels of government.
Majority Leader Frist must realize if these people do succeed in blocking appointments and legislation, they may very well take control of the Senate and indeed even the White House in 2004.
At that point the only recourse may be for Republicans to employ the threat of filibusters to prevent the liberal power grab. You can be sure the liberals will force Republicans to actually use real filibusters and then castigate them in the press.
Best to play the cards now dealt, rather than wait until the deck is stacked against us.
