Jayden Adams, who represented South Africa as a midfielder in the country’s first two World Cup matches against Mexico and Czechia, was found dead in Cape Town. His death came less than 24 hours after posting a photo of himself and his girlfriend on social media.
In a public statement announcing his death, the South African Football Players Union said: “The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams.”
"Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction,” the statement said. “His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched," it continued. “South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”
South Africa's Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie issued a tribute to Adams on social media, including an image of the pair hugging.
“Rest in perfect peace my boy,” he wrote.
Adams had seen an increase in recognition in the country for his soccer career before playing on the World Cup team. According to a report by the Daily Mail, he was expected to play a major role in the next generation of the team.
The circumstances surrounding his death are currently unclear and are under investigation. Adams was dealing with the death of his grandmother leading up to the World Cup, who had died just two weeks before and was buried while he was in the US. He also had suffered the loss of one of his closest friends, South African youth soccer player Oshwin Andries, who was killed three years ago after being stabbed.
