The funeral, delayed for months because of the war, honored Khamenei and four members of his family who were killed on February 28 during the opening day of the conflict involving the United States and Israel. The event was held at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla and drew senior Iranian political, military, and judicial officials.
“From now on the shroud is our garment. I swear by your blood; Trump’s murder is our responsibility,” Rasouli said, according to The Guardian.
He continued: “Why is the most bastard man in the world still alive? The world is no longer a good place for Trump. Why should we not kill the man who killed our imam? It would be a disgrace if we did not.”
According to reports from the ceremony, the remarks received a mixed reaction, though many attendees applauded. Mourners also displayed signs, including one written in English that read, "Kill Trump," while chants of "No compromise, no surrender, only revenge" echoed through the gathering.
Mohammed Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran's National Security Council, said the funeral crowd was united by two messages.
“People are shouting two slogans in farewell to their leader: resistance against enemies and revenge for the blood of the martyred leader of Iran.”
Iran's ambassador to Armenia, Khalil Shirgholami, also posted a message on X following the ceremony.
“You can kill people, but you can’t kill ideals. You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality you broke a bottle of perfume, the fragrance of which has now spread everywhere. You will never understand this because you have no civilisation, no history, no honour.”
One notable absence at the funeral was Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Although appointed 10 days after his father's death, he has not appeared publicly or released an audio message in the months since. His three brothers—Mustafa, Massoud, and Meysam—stood beside their father's coffin during the ceremony.
Officials have acknowledged Mojtaba Khamenei was injured in the February attack but have said he did not suffer permanent facial disfigurement or an amputation. Iran has not released an official attendance figure for Sunday's funeral.
