Cabo San Lucas turned chaotic Wednesday when a vehicle drove into a crowd of football fans, injuring at least 17 people, according to Mexican authorities who say an investigation is now underway.

The incident unfolded around 10 pm in the Centro district of the resort city in Baja California Sur, an area known for its tourist nightlife. Officials say the gathering had formed to celebrate Mexico’s men’s national team following its win over the Czech Republic.

The General Directorate of Public Security of Los Cabos said in a statement on social media that the crash happened “during a massive gathering of citizens.” The agency said the driver was surrounded by people blocking the vehicle’s path and “executed a sudden acceleration maneuver, causing several pedestrians to be struck.”

Emergency services transported the injured to local hospitals. Alberto Rentería Santana, secretary general of the Los Cabos City Council, said on social media that 17 people were receiving treatment. Health officials later said one person remained in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed the driver was detained at the scene and initially taken to hospital before being transferred into custody.

Video footage verified by The New York Times shows a black sedan pushing through a dense crowd gathered outside bars near the marina area. People can be heard shouting and sounding air horns as some strike the vehicle while it moves forward repeatedly.

The vehicle continues accelerating through the group before crashing into roadside bollards. In the footage, one person wearing a Mexico national team jersey is seen lying motionless and bleeding on the curb nearby.

The circumstances surrounding the driver’s actions remain under investigation by state authorities in Baja California Sur.

The Mexican Football Federation issued a statement following the incident, saying it “deeply regrets” what occurred and calling on authorities to “clarify what happened and determine the corresponding responsibilities.”
