Two relatives of Mexico’s federal education minister were killed early Saturday during a home invasion in the city of Colima, authorities confirmed, setting off a police operation that later left three alleged suspects dead.

State officials said Maria Eugenia Delgado Guizar, 72, and her daughter, Sheila María Eugenia Amezcua Delgado, 49, were murdered inside their home in the Placetas Estadio neighborhood at around 4:30 am. Both women were identified as close relatives of Education Minister Mario Delgado, with Delgado Guízar being his aunt and Amezcua Delgado his cousin.

According to a joint statement from the Colima Attorney General’s Office and the state government, armed men broke into the residence and killed the two women. State police responded to the scene and opened an investigation under Mexico’s femicide protocol, which applies a gender-based framework to crimes involving female victims, Mexico News Daily.

Authorities said no motive for the killings has yet been established.

Later on Saturday, police located a light blue Chevrolet Groove believed to have been used in the attack outside a residence in the neighboring municipality of Villa de Álvarez.

The vehicle was identified through video analysis and tracking conducted by the Colima C5 command center, with support from federal agencies operating in the state.

When officers approached the property, they were met with gunfire, according to officials. Police returned fire, killing three individuals described as “alleged criminals who are presumed to have participated” in the double homicide. One police officer was wounded in the exchange but was reported to be out of danger.

Inside the Villa de Alvarez residence, police recovered firearms and additional evidence that authorities said matched information obtained from surveillance footage. The items reportedly included clothing worn by the suspected attackers and a sledgehammer believed to have been used to force entry into the victims’ home.

Colima continues to rank among Mexico’s most violent states. With a population of roughly 730,000, the state recorded 625 homicides in 2025, the highest per-capita homicide rate in the country at 81.5 murders per 100,000 people, according to data compiled by the crime statistics site elcri.men. The municipality of Colima itself ranked 14th nationwide.

Education Minister Delgado acknowledged the killings in a social media post late Saturday, writing in Spanish that he felt deep "dismay, outrage and sadness" over the deaths of his aunt and cousin, who he said were “brutally murdered in their home.”
