President Donald Trump sent a message to European leaders warning that he no longer feels bound to prioritize peace after missing out on last year’s Nobel Peace Prize and amid renewed threats to take control of Greenland, according to reporting by PBS. The message was addressed to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and later forwarded to multiple European ambassadors in Washington, PBS reported.

Trump wrote that because Norway did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize, he could now focus more broadly on what he views as US interests.

“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote, adding that peace would “always be predominant,” but no longer exclusive, "but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America."

Trump went on to question Denmark’s claim to Greenland, arguing that Copenhagen cannot defend the territory from Russia or China. “Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway?” Trump wrote, asserting that historical claims were insufficient.

He also referenced the US role in the alliance, writing, “I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States.” Trump concluded, “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

Store confirmed to Norwegian tabloid VG that he received the message Sunday afternoon, saying it followed a request for a three-way call that would have included Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump posted on Truth Social that NATO had warned Denmark for years about Russian threats near Greenland, claiming Denmark failed to act. He also threatened new 10% tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK unless Copenhagen agreed to a “complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

The comments came days after Trump hosted Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, at the White House, where she presented him with her medal. The Nobel Committee later clarified that while the medal can be gifted, the award itself is not transferable. Norway’s government does not control the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded by an independent committee.
